On April 6, 2012 I spent 3 hours (5:30 AM to 8:20 AM) at Featherstone Road in Woodbridge, VA. Although I didn’t catch anything really unusual, I did find some coconuts near the tracks. Yes, coconuts. Near railroad tracks. In Virginia. The crossing is just over a mile from Rippon Station, but some VRE trains still manage to reach track speed (70 MPH). Trains: 0:00 – VRE 300. It probably wasn’t smart for me to aim the camera into the darkness, making it impossible for it to focus on anything. 0:34 – VRE 302. Don’t beat me up for this, but the cab car’s horn just reminded me of those old train horns – perhaps a Leslie? 1:10 – VRE 304. Speaking of that cab car horn, it has such a distinct sound that even regular VRE riders have commented about it. Some have called it a “strangled rooster” or a “ruptured duck.” 1:42 – Amtrak Silver Meteor 98. The last few times I saw this train, it had either a private car or even the 40th Anniversary Train! Of course, the time I bring my camera is when it’s just the usual consist. 2:36 – VRE 306. 3:37 – VRE 308. 4:18 – CSX freight train. I never know the numbers of these. Despite also running northbound, it was on the other track. I guess CSX didn’t want to take any chances of it interfering with the passenger trains. 6:04 – Amtrak 86 Northeast Regional. 6:40 – VRE 310. The consist of all the old Pullman Galleries is kind of like Amtrak’s “Rainbow Trains.” If you watch very closely, you can see the engineer wave at me as he zips by the camera …
